Minimally invasive reconstruction of the upper urinary tract has established itself as one of the pillars of modern urology, driven by advances in robotic surgery, the increasing complexity of cases referred to specialized centers, and the need to preserve renal function. The incorporation of advanced reconstructive techniques, combined with the use of imaging technologies and robotic platforms, has enabled more precise, safe, and reproducible approaches, leading to better functional outcomes and lower morbidity for patients.

The Recontech Ureter course : Hands-on in robotic ureteroplasties, pyeloplasties, and complex urethral reconstructions, to be held July 20–26, 2026, was designed to meet this growing demand by offering urologists in-depth training that integrates strategic fundamentals, advanced reconstructive techniques, and the management of complex situations. The course aims to equip participants with skills ranging from a detailed understanding of applied surgical anatomy, the pathophysiology of obstructions, and advanced diagnostic evaluation, to the precise execution of key robotic reconstructive techniques.

The theoretical curriculum systematically covers procedures such as segmental robotic pyeloplasty, ureteral reimplantation, psoas hitch, Boari flap, ureterocalicostomy, transureterostomy, and ureteroplasty with oral mucosa graft, as well as the structured management of intra- and postoperative complications and the critical analysis of complex cases. The content is guided by principles of evidence-based decision-making, surgical safety, and preservation of renal function.

Hands-on activities are a central component of the course, including the performance of robotic pyeloplasty and ureterovesical reimplantation on live models, as well as intensive training in suturing and anastomosis using high-fidelity laparoscopic and robotic simulators. The analysis of videos of complex cases complements the training, fostering surgical reasoning and strategic planning in highly complex scenarios.

SCHEDULE

Day One: Strategic Fundamentals

  • Lesson 1 - Applied Surgical Anatomy and Pathophysiology of Obstruction
    Learning Objectives: Map the renal and ureteral vasculature for a safe dissection; Understand the mechanisms of fibrosis and obstruction; Identify key surgical planes in the robotic approach.
  • Lesson 2 - Advanced Diagnostic Evaluation
    Competencies: Interpret functional studies (renogram, contrast-enhanced MRI) to inform decision-making; Select the best imaging method for each type of stenosis; Plan surgery based on 3D imaging findings.
  • Lesson 3 - Segmental Robotic Pyeloplasty: The 10 Critical Steps
    Skills: Safely expose the renal pelvis and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ); Perform spatelation and tension-free anastomosis; Prevent and manage injuries to the polar vessels.
  • Lesson 4 - Principles of Robotic Reconstructive Suturing
    Skills: Master the technique of intracorporeal suturing with absorbable and non-absorbable sutures; Tie sliding and self-locking knots; Ensure a watertight and well-coapted anastomosis.

Day 2: Advanced Techniques and Special Situations 

  • Lesson 1 - Robotic Ureteral Reimplantation: Decision Guide
    Skills: Choose between the Lich-Gregoir and extravesical techniques; Perform submucosal tunneling to prevent reflux; Manage the distal ureter in cases of fibrosis.
  • Lesson 2 - The Surgeon's Toolkit: Psoas Hitch and Boari Flap
    Skills: Perform bladder fixation to the psoas muscle (psoas hitch) to gain ureteral length; Plan and create a well-vascularized Boari flap for long defects.
  • Lesson 3 - The Surgeon's Toolkit (Part 2): Ureterocalicostomy and Transureterostomy
    Competencies: Indicate and perform ureterocalicostomy in cases of complex proximal strictures; Indicate and perform transureterostomy in exceptional cases.
  • Lesson 4 - Ureteroplasty with Oral Mucosal Graft
    Competencies: Master the technique for harvesting and preparing an oral mucosal graft; Perform ureteral lumen enlargement surgery using the graft; Understand the outcomes and complications associated with the technique.

 

Day 3: Managing Complications and Outcomes 

  • Lesson 1 - Intraoperative: How to Get Out of a Bind
    Skills: Manage bleeding from renal and gonadal vessels; Identify and correct a devitalized ureter; Convert to open surgery in a safe and structured manner.
  • Lesson 2 - Postoperative Care: Preventing and Treating Fistulas and Restenosis
    Competencies: Apply protocols for managing drains and catheters; Diagnose fistulas and strictures early; Indicate and perform endoscopic or surgical treatment of complications.
  • Lesson 3 - Case Roundtable (Part 1)
    Competencies: Discuss and propose solutions for cases of JUN stenosis in a single kidney and reoperations.
  • Lesson 4 - Roundtable Discussion of Cases (Part 2)
    Competencies: Discuss and propose solutions for cases of iatrogenic ureteral injury and post-radiotherapy strictures or endometriosis.

Practical Classes (in-person at Scolla)

  • Practical Skills:
    • Perform a disassembled robotic pyeloplasty on a laboratory animal.
    • Perform robotic ureterovesical reimplantation in a laboratory animal.
    • Practice suturing and anastomosis techniques using high-fidelity laparoscopic and robotic simulators.
    • Analyze videos of complex cases, focusing on the surgeon's decision-making process.
